Delivering expert education, advice and solutions so that nurses, carers and other health care professionals can move, transfer and reposition people safely.

The importance of correct manual handling education

Using unsafe manual handling techniques (e.g. incorrect lifting techniques, incorrect posture and moving items that are too heavy for a single person) can cause a variety of musculoskeletal injuries which can impact upon the person’s ability to work and their quality of life.

Musculoskeletal injuries that may occur from manual handling injuries can include:

• Muscle sprains and strains

• Ligament or tendon damage

• Prolapsed intervertebral disks

• Tendonitis of the shoulders/elbows

• Abdominal hernias

• Nerve damage.

The most common industry where women experienced a work-related injury or illness was health care and social assistance*

Workplace injuries to women

In 2021-22 alone, 497,300 people had a work-related injury or illness in Australia. The most common cause of injury or illness was 'Lifting, pushing, pulling or bending' (24%)*
