Texas

Texas is the first state to pass legislation requiring hospitals and nursing homes to implement a safe patient handling and movement program.

New York

The New York legislature has passed and sent to the governor for his signature, a bill that authorizes a two-year study to establish safe patient handling standards.

California

California has introduced legislation twice. Both houses have passed laws that were later vetoed by the governor. We expect California to pass a safe patient handling law in the near future.

Other States

Other states are currently working on similar legislation. Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey and Washington have introduced legislation calling for the establishment of programs to prevent patient handling injuries.

A Proven Approach to Regulatory Compliance

Australia - Global Leader in Patient Handling

Australia is one of the countries at the forefront to impose standards of patient handling to reduce injuries to both patients and provider personnel.

O'Shea is the Leader in Australia

Australian RN, Louise O'Shea developed the O'Shea No Lift System in 1996, based on her hospital experience as both a nurse and health and safety advisor.

Her approach was unique in its focus on the often conflicting interests of multiple constituencies common to most healthcare environments.

Today, 90% of state government facilities in Victoria, Australia use the O'Shea System.

It's More than Just Training

Highly adaptable, the O'Shea System was developed to be customized to specific health care settings and to varying levels of governmental and institutional regulations. Each implementation of the O'Shea System addresses organizational, environmental, staff and patient risk factors associated with patient handling.

Reduces Injuries and Costs

Safe patient handling is a win-win for medical facilities because it reduces patient injuries, personnel injuries and personnel recruitment costs.

Not only does the O'Shea System improve a facility's bottom line by reducing costly worker's compensation claims and the risk of patient suits, but employees at these facilities report higher job satisfaction.
